  • From the ASPCA:

“Valentine’s Day can be as much fun for pets as it is for humans if dangerous foods, flora and other items are kept out of paws’ reach. Each year our poison control experts see a rise in cases around February 14, many involving chocolate and lilies, a flower that’s potentially fatal to cats. So please heed our experts’ advice—don’t leave the goodies lying around on Lover’s Day.”

  • Midwest Animal and Potbellied Pig Association & Rescue (MAPPAR; (http://www.mappar.org), a farm animal sanctuary in Pardeeville, WI, just inherited about 30 additional cats from a cat rescue, since the woman who ran it is now in a nursing home.

This is a major problem for MAPPAR since they had many cats to begin with. In addition, many of the cats have respiratory problems. They need to receive antibiotics for 21 days and be separated from sick cats. So MAPPAR is looking for people to foster the cats with respiratory problems for 21 days, after which they will return to the shelter. The respiratory problem is contagious, so people with cats cannot foster.

This involves giving cats daily medicine, so keep that responsibilty in mind. MAPPAR will cover all medical expenses AND give you food!

If you can foster and are not in Chicago, please contact Elissa (elissa@mail.utexas.edu). If you’re in Chicago, you can contact Christine (christineconnelly@mac.com)- she can bring the cats to you from MAPPAR once we get a few people on board.

MAPPAR is a wonderful place and I recommend visiting it. If you are interested, they always appreciate help with work in the farm. Currently, many of the new cats are starving for affection, so playing with the cats and giving them affection would be greatly appreciated.
